There are 6 main government programs that every American who qualifies should be enrolled in. These are highlighted below:

Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)

If you can’t afford to pay your home heating or cooling bill, you may be able to get help from the government or your local social services agency or nonprofit. 

Who qualifies?
Actual requirements may vary by state, city, or region. Each local LIHEAP office sets its own eligibility requirements. Generally speaking, if you’re already receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF or welfare), or certain needs-tested veterans benefits you may be automatically eligible.

Emergency Rental Assistance

The government COVID-19 eviction moratorium has ended. Landlords now have the ability to evict renters who are not able to pay rent during the COVID-19 pandemic. As a renter or as a landlord, government programs can help you with rent money and advice for your situation

The U.S. Treasury Department has collected websites associated with our grantees’ Emergency Rental Assistance (ERA) programs to help tenants and landlords find rental assistance programs in their local areas. Search for your local Emergency Rental Assistance program by state or Territory here.

Get advice from housing counselors – speak to a HUD approved counselor to get advice on your specific situation.

Help with Medical Bills – Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP)

Welfare or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families

Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) is a federally funded, state-run benefits program. Also known as welfare, TANF helps families achieve independence after experiencing temporary difficulties.

Help Paying for Phone or Cell Phone Service – Lifeline Service

Lifeline is a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) program. It helps individuals and families who have a low income get discounted landline or cell phone service. Some people also qualify for a free phone.
